Supplements are not simply \u201cthe more, the better\u201d. Vitamins and minerals act like a small orchestra in the body \u2013 if some play too loudly or in the wrong rhythm, others are not heard at all. Certain combinations <strong data-start=\"510\" data-end=\"535\">reduce absorption<\/strong> , others can <strong data-start=\"551\" data-end=\"596\">affect each other\u2019s biochemical activity<\/strong> , and still others can cause <strong data-start=\"621\" data-end=\"647\">interactions with medications<\/strong> .   <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"811\">Below, we&#8217;ll take a closer look at <strong data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"768\">which combinations can reduce or alter each other&#8217;s effects<\/strong> and how to wisely space them out over time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"811\">NB! The following explanations are <strong data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"908\">for general informational purposes only and do not replace the advice of a doctor or pharmacist<\/strong> \u2013 especially if you are taking medication or have a chronic illness. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"834\"><strong>1. Calcium + Iron<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"862\">\u2014 opposing minerals**<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"864\" data-end=\"1040\">Calcium is one of the strongest inhibitors of iron absorption. Studies show that as little as 300\u2013600 mg of calcium dramatically reduces the absorption of iron from both food and supplements. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1061\"><strong data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1059\">Why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1062\" data-end=\"1125\">\n<li data-start=\"1062\" data-end=\"1125\">\n<p data-start=\"1064\" data-end=\"1125\"><a href=\"https:\/\/test.puhdasplus.ee\/\/tooted\/joints-muscles-and-bones\/kaltsiumtsitraat-200-mg-120-g\/\">Calcium<\/a> blocks iron transport proteins (DMT1 transporters).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1127\" data-end=\"1290\"><strong data-start=\"1127\" data-end=\"1147\">Scientific reference:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1147\" data-end=\"1150\"> Hallberg et al., <em data-start=\"1167\" data-end=\"1207\">American Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/em> , 1991 \u2014 showed that calcium reduces the absorption of heme and non-heme iron by up to 50%.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1063\" data-end=\"1084\">What happens in the body?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1424\">\n<li data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1202\">\n<p data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1202\"><a href=\"https:\/\/test.puhdasplus.ee\/\/tooted\/vitamins\/vitamin-c\/raud-20-mg-b12-foolhape-c-vitamiin-60-kapslit\/\">Iron<\/a> (especially non-heme iron from dietary supplements) is absorbed in the small intestine through special transport proteins (e.g. DMT1).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1344\">\n<p data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1344\">Calcium <strong data-start=\"1214\" data-end=\"1256\">competes for the same mechanisms<\/strong> , and studies show that calcium can <strong data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1341\">significantly inhibit<\/strong> iron absorption.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1345\" data-end=\"1424\">\n<p data-start=\"1347\" data-end=\"1424\">The effect has been observed for both dietary and supplemental iron.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1620\">One classic study found that approximately <strong data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1494\">300\u2013600 mg of calcium<\/strong> per meal can reduce iron absorption by up to ~50%. (Hallberg et al., <em data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1612\">American Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/em> , 1991). <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1622\" data-end=\"1655\">To whom is this particularly important?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1890\">\n<li data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1715\">\n<p data-start=\"1659\" data-end=\"1715\">for people with <strong data-start=\"1681\" data-end=\"1692\">anemia<\/strong> or low ferritin;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1716\" data-end=\"1769\">\n<p data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1769\">pregnant women, adolescents, women with heavy menstruation;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1861\">\n<p data-start=\"1772\" data-end=\"1861\">vegetarians and vegans (because their iron sources are predominantly non-heme iron);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1862\" data-end=\"1890\">\n<p data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1890\">children during growth spurts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1892\" data-end=\"2003\">If you are taking iron supplements as a \u201ctreatment,\u201d taking them with calcium may simply make the treatment less effective.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2031\">Practical recommendations<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2283\">\n<li data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2109\">\n<p data-start=\"2035\" data-end=\"2109\">Do not take <strong data-start=\"2044\" data-end=\"2106\">iron supplements with calcium supplements or dairy products<\/strong> .<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2110\" data-end=\"2165\">\n<p data-start=\"2112\" data-end=\"2165\">Leave at least <strong data-start=\"2151\" data-end=\"2162\">2 hours<\/strong> between iron and calcium.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2283\">\n<p data-start=\"2168\" data-end=\"2180\">Take iron:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2283\">\n<li data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2283\">\n<p data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2283\">on an empty stomach or with a small amount of vitamin C (e.g. orange juice), which <strong data-start=\"2254\" data-end=\"2282\">improves iron absorption<\/strong> .<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1383\" data-end=\"1430\"><strong data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1430\">2. Calcium + Magnesium (high doses)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1432\" data-end=\"1550\">There is no problem when combined in low doses, but large amounts compete for absorption channels in the intestine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1552\" data-end=\"1578\"><strong data-start=\"1552\" data-end=\"1576\">Scientific justification:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1579\" data-end=\"1644\">\n<li data-start=\"1579\" data-end=\"1644\">\n<p data-start=\"1581\" data-end=\"1644\">Both use the TRPM6\/7 transporters of intestinal epithelial cells.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1783\"><strong data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1656\">Reference:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1659\"> Rylander et al., <em data-start=\"1676\" data-end=\"1722\">Journal of the American College of Nutrition<\/em> , 2001 \u2014 discusses the interaction of minerals on absorption.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2343\" data-end=\"2364\">What is happening in the body?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2760\">\n<li data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2493\">\n<p data-start=\"2368\" data-end=\"2493\">Both calcium and magnesium are <strong data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2440\">divalent minerals (Ca\u00b2\u207a, Mg\u00b2\u207a)<\/strong> and use partially similar pathways for absorption.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2587\">\n<p data-start=\"2496\" data-end=\"2587\">In normal, moderate doses (such as in multivitamins or food), the problem is not much.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2588\" data-end=\"2760\">\n<p data-start=\"2590\" data-end=\"2760\">But if you take <strong data-start=\"2604\" data-end=\"2630\">large doses at once<\/strong> (e.g. 500 mg of calcium + 300\u2013400 mg of magnesium), they can <strong data-start=\"2690\" data-end=\"2724\">compete for absorption<\/strong> , so less of both is available.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"2762\" data-end=\"2782\">Important to whom?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"3005\">\n<li data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"2897\">\n<p data-start=\"2786\" data-end=\"2897\">for those taking separate strong calcium and magnesium supplements (e.g. for bone health and muscle\/performance);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2898\" data-end=\"2940\">\n<p data-start=\"2900\" data-end=\"2940\">for the elderly and people with osteoporosis;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2941\" data-end=\"3005\">\n<p data-start=\"2943\" data-end=\"3005\">for those who already have malabsorption disorders (such as intestinal diseases).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"3007\" data-end=\"3031\">How to do it wisely?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3033\" data-end=\"3215\">\n<li data-start=\"3033\" data-end=\"3215\">\n<p data-start=\"3035\" data-end=\"3065\">If the doses are high, take:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3068\" data-end=\"3215\">\n<li data-start=\"3068\" data-end=\"3136\">\n<p data-start=\"3070\" data-end=\"3136\"><strong data-start=\"3070\" data-end=\"3102\">calcium during the day with food<\/strong> (bone support, better absorption),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3139\" data-end=\"3215\">\n<p data-start=\"3141\" data-end=\"3215\"><strong data-start=\"3141\" data-end=\"3180\">magnesium in the evening before going to bed<\/strong> (relaxing, supports the nervous system).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1898\" data-end=\"1921\"><strong data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"1919\">3. Zinc + Copper<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1922\" data-end=\"1957\">\u2014 zinc overdose suppresses copper levels<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1959\" data-end=\"2096\">Excessive zinc consumption can cause copper deficiency because zinc reduces copper absorption in the intestine through the activation of metallothioneins.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2098\" data-end=\"2204\"><strong data-start=\"2098\" data-end=\"2118\">Scientific reference:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2121\"> Prasad et al., <em data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2147\">Nutrition<\/em> , 2013 \u2014 Zinc overdose causes secondary copper deficiency.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3301\" data-end=\"3316\">What happens?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3318\" data-end=\"3625\">\n<li data-start=\"3318\" data-end=\"3412\">\n<p data-start=\"3320\" data-end=\"3412\">High amounts of zinc promote the synthesis of a protein called <strong data-start=\"3381\" data-end=\"3400\">metallothionein<\/strong> in intestinal cells.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3413\" data-end=\"3539\">\n<p data-start=\"3415\" data-end=\"3539\">Metallothionein preferentially binds <strong data-start=\"3448\" data-end=\"3469\">the copper ion (Cu\u00b2\u207a)<\/strong> , after which the copper does not enter the bloodstream and is instead excreted in the feces.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3540\" data-end=\"3625\">\n<p data-start=\"3542\" data-end=\"3625\">The result may be <strong data-start=\"3563\" data-end=\"3577\">a copper deficiency<\/strong> , even though the person happily takes zinc supplements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3627\" data-end=\"3701\">This is well described, for example, in the works of Prasad et al., <em data-start=\"3675\" data-end=\"3686\">Nutrition<\/em> (2013).<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3703\" data-end=\"3724\">Why is this bad?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3726\" data-end=\"3753\">Copper deficiency can cause:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3754\" data-end=\"3865\">\n<li data-start=\"3754\" data-end=\"3776\">\n<p data-start=\"3756\" data-end=\"3776\">fatigue, weakness;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3777\" data-end=\"3816\">\n<p data-start=\"3779\" data-end=\"3816\">paleness (anemia-like signs);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3817\" data-end=\"3843\">\n<p data-start=\"3819\" data-end=\"3843\">nervous system disorders;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3844\" data-end=\"3865\">\n<p data-start=\"3846\" data-end=\"3865\">decrease in immunity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"3867\" data-end=\"3895\">Who should take note?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3897\" data-end=\"4139\">\n<li data-start=\"3897\" data-end=\"4007\">\n<p data-start=\"3899\" data-end=\"4007\">people who take <strong data-start=\"3921\" data-end=\"3963\">more than 25\u201330 mg of zinc per day for a long time<\/strong> (acne, immunity, hair problems, etc.);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4008\" data-end=\"4139\">\n<p data-start=\"4010\" data-end=\"4139\">those who take several zinc-rich products at the same time during the &#8220;cold season&#8221; (zinc+immunity, zinc+vitamin C, zinc lozenges, etc.).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"4141\" data-end=\"4155\">What to do?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"4157\" data-end=\"4379\">\n<li data-start=\"4157\" data-end=\"4271\">\n<p data-start=\"4159\" data-end=\"4271\">For long-term use <strong data-start=\"4194\" data-end=\"4244\">, prefer a supplement that also contains copper in addition to zinc<\/strong> (e.g. Zn:Cu ratio ~8\u201315:1).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4272\" data-end=\"4379\">\n<p data-start=\"4274\" data-end=\"4379\">If you take zinc &#8220;hard and alone&#8221;, consult a healthcare professional and do not do it for months in a row.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2324\"><strong data-start=\"2303\" data-end=\"2322\">4. (Am J Clin Nutr, 1985) showed that concomitant zinc supplementation reduced iron absorption.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4782\" data-end=\"4806\">Who should take into account?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"4808\" data-end=\"4978\">\n<li data-start=\"4808\" data-end=\"4907\">\n<p data-start=\"4810\" data-end=\"4907\">people with <strong data-start=\"4830\" data-end=\"4844\">iron deficiency<\/strong> who are also taking zinc for immunity or skin;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4908\" data-end=\"4978\">\n<p data-start=\"4910\" data-end=\"4978\">pregnant women who have been prescribed an iron supplement and who are also taking zinc.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"4980\" data-end=\"5004\">How to combine?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"5006\" data-end=\"5168\">\n<li data-start=\"5006\" data-end=\"5100\">\n<p data-start=\"5008\" data-end=\"5100\">take <strong data-start=\"5013\" data-end=\"5045\">iron supplements at one time of day<\/strong> and zinc <strong data-start=\"5055\" data-end=\"5065\">at another<\/strong> (e.g. iron in the morning, zinc in the evening);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5101\" data-end=\"5168\">\n<p data-start=\"5103\" data-end=\"5168\">or divide them <strong data-start=\"5117\" data-end=\"5134\">into different days<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong data-start=\"2698\" data-end=\"2730\">5. Vitamin C + Vitamin B12<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2732\" data-end=\"2856\">Studies show that very high doses of vitamin C (500\u20131000 mg at a time) can <strong data-start=\"2815\" data-end=\"2855\">break down vitamin B12 in the digestive tract<\/strong> .<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5234\" data-end=\"5249\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"5251\" data-end=\"5560\">\n<li data-start=\"5251\" data-end=\"5402\">\n<p data-start=\"5253\" data-end=\"5402\">Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant and acidic. In very high doses (500\u20131000 mg and above), it can affect the stability of vitamin B12 in the digestive tract. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5403\" data-end=\"5560\">\n<p data-start=\"5405\" data-end=\"5560\">Some studies have shown that high doses of vitamin C can <strong data-start=\"5460\" data-end=\"5518\">break down vitamin B12 or reduce its absorption<\/strong> if taken at the exact same time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5562\" data-end=\"5662\"><strong data-start=\"2858\" data-end=\"2868\">Reference:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2868\" data-end=\"2871\"> Herbert &amp; Jacob, <em data-start=\"2888\" data-end=\"2919\">Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/em> , 1992 \u2014 High vitamin C intake reduces the stability of vitamin B12.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5664\" data-end=\"5684\">Important to whom?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"5686\" data-end=\"5884\">\n<li data-start=\"5686\" data-end=\"5747\">\n<p data-start=\"5688\" data-end=\"5747\">for vegetarians and vegans who take a B12 supplement,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5748\" data-end=\"5829\">\n<p data-start=\"5750\" data-end=\"5829\">for people who use <strong data-start=\"5776\" data-end=\"5801\">megadoses of vitamin C<\/strong> (e.g. 1000\u20132000 mg per day),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5830\" data-end=\"5884\">\n<p data-start=\"5832\" data-end=\"5884\">People with B12 deficiency or stomach acidity problems.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"5886\" data-end=\"5909\">Practical solution<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"5911\" data-end=\"6044\">\n<li data-start=\"5911\" data-end=\"5976\">\n<p data-start=\"5913\" data-end=\"5976\">take <strong data-start=\"5918\" data-end=\"5941\">vitamin B12 separately<\/strong> \u2013 for example, in the morning on an empty stomach;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5977\" data-end=\"6044\">\n<p data-start=\"5979\" data-end=\"6044\">Vitamin C 1\u20132 hours later with food or in the second half of the day.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"3092\" data-end=\"3143\"><strong data-start=\"3094\" data-end=\"3143\">6.
